Ahh. ”A Europewide Search for Love” är 5:09 minuter skotsk pop när den är som bäst. Gordon McIntyre pratsjunger fram en berättelse som verkar beskiva en hel generation. Generationen vilsna sökare. Jag uppskattade inte låten till fullo på skivan, ”A guide for the daylight hours”. Där fanns nämligen några direkta hits och resten av skivan hamnade lite i skymundan av dem. Men på singeln får den, med all rätt, stå i centrum.

Ballboy är en kvartett från Edinburgh, och varenda låt de hittills släppt har bestått av enkel, melodiös popmusik med fantastiska texter. Precis som i ”A Europewide search for love”. Därför kommer b-sidan, "Fuck this for a game of japs and commandoes", som en total överraskning. Det är nån sorts distad gitarrmanglande nittiotalspsykedelia à la Spiritualized och My Bloody Valentine. Större delen av texten går "I've got a guitar and it's all I need". Och, för all del, det låter bra. Inte helt olikt Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. (Vilket antagligen betyder att det låter som Jesus And Mary Chain.)

Jag skulle ändå inte vilja höra ett helt album med den här distade rocken, det finns det andra som kan göra bättre. Och, jag kan pusta ut. Som gömt spår finns nämligen en klassisk Ballboy-visa, med text av David Shrigley – konstnären som medverkade med en booklet på deras förra skiva och som gör alldeles geniala illustrationer. Den är dock inte lika given som titelspåret.

Nu kära barn, ska vi högläsa "A Europewide Search for Love" tillsammans. Texten finns nedan och för de som inte lyder frivilligt blir det kvarsittning, med tvångsläsning av samma text. Vi börjar på tre. 1, 2, 3… "it was only me who was awake…"
