Girlfrendo
Vivid Confusion (CDS)
This may not be Girlfrendo quite at their best, but even Girlfrendo slightly off target is still miles better than most bands could ever dream of. Having said that, the nursery rhyme pop of Vivid Confusion is as poppy and infectious as you would expect, but it is let down by the comparative weakness of the two accompanying tracks. Level 5 is a pleasant but inconsequential instrumental noodling, whilst the cover of Walking With Jesus never really gets off the ground.

Ladytron
Miss Black And Her Friends (CD)
Ladytron perfectly capture the sense of excitement and discovery that blossomed in the late seventies and early eighties, an era when the electronic sounds of dour German electronic experimentalism were being used in pop music for the first time. Any danger of the record descending into pale pastiche is avoided by the sheer quality of the songs on offer, which include He Took Her To A Movie, the Flying Lizards alike effort previously heard on an Invicta Hi-Fi compilation, and seven other bleepy gems.
