Lesson 1 - Introducing Chords
Basically speaking, a chord is any combination of three or more pitches that occur simultaneously. They can be arrived at as the conglomeration of individual melodies or they can be played intentionally as block chords. Either way, the way we examine these chords will be the same.

In the first course, Basic Music Properties and Notation, we learned that sound has properties. Chords also have properties. These properties include:

  • Consonance and Dissonance
  • Harmonic Density
  • Texture
  • Voicing
  • Spacing
Over the next few lessons we will be discussing each of these properties.
