The three new mines are at Tokadeh, Gangra and Yuelliton - all in the Nimba area. Mittal Steel Liberia is also constructing a concentrator at Tokadeh, which is 30 kilometers south of the deposit that was mined from the 1960s to the 1980s by Lamco. Mittal is targeting to have production of over 12 million tons of ore per year. Production could start late 2009 or early 2010. They will rehabilitate about 300 kilometers (200 miles or so) of railway between this mine area and the port of Buchanan. The project also includes rehabilitating the port. This sounds fantastic! Maybe we can have a reunion in Libera in a few years?!

There will be mining in Nimba again!! Rotterdam/Luxembourg, December 11, 2006 - The Government of Liberia and Arcelor Mittal are pleased to announce that they have successfully concluded the review of the mining development agreement signed in 2005. This landmark agreement will bring the country investment of over one billion US dollars and is expected to generate about 3,500 direct jobs and about 15,000 to 20,000 indirect jobs in Liberia by the time full mining production is realized. With this iron ore mining agreement, the Government and Arcelor Mittal will be partners in jumpstarting economic recovery and development for Liberia. President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf noted: "With this agreement, which is consistent with the principles that attract and sustain foreign investment in Liberia, it is clear to the international private sector that Liberia is open for business". Responding Mr. Lakshmi Mittal, President and CEO of Arcelor Mittal, noted: "I am happy that the Government of Liberia and Arcelor Mittal have reviewed the Mineral Development Agreement jointly in good faith and have agreed to changes which allow the project to move forward. This will enable the economy of Liberia and the people of Liberia to benefit significantly. We will now focus on getting the job of reviving the mine accelerated"

Thanks for the site and your love and energy for Liberia. I have a charity that is based in Liberia presently. I travel to Liberia frequently every year. My charity is a affiliate of Hands On Network. One of my biggest wish and prayer is a sustainable PEACE initiatives. On this ground we are trying very hard to have a week of activities, to Inform, Educate, Research and clamax have a street Carnival for the children to know and experience thesence of community cohesion and Celebration of what we have. Just to let you know that we will be looking up to people like your self to have a chance to contribute, got back at the time fo the event or even volunteers for the many activities, giving you a chance to see liberia again, though it may be a bit sad or emotional but reconnection is better than the sudden cut off. We went to Liberia in July/August 1971 to spend time with my husband's family at ENI Mission, Sinoe County led by Augustus B. Marwieh) and to be married on Aug. 5th. President Tubman had just died in London and the whole airport was draped in black & the streets were in an uproar! It was a 13 hr. car trip from Monrovia, often slipping off the slick mud roads, but it was wonderful to meet so many lovely people. The mission was in the deepest jungle of Liberia, but still 300 people that heard our wedding announced on Liberian National Radio on their little transistor radios took it as an invitation, and started to arrive 'out of the jungle'. They brought small gifts, (carvings, african cloth, a chicken...) It was the first 'white' wedding any of them had ever heard of or seen (does anyone know of any others?)We wore traditional african cloth robes/lappas and bubbas. We had to buy a cow (on the hoof, poor thing) and the local women made the best stew (in a real missionary stew pot!) with palm butter and jolop greens (?) to feed everyone. There was singing & dancing into the night in the local village, lots of cane juice and machete tossing, I'm sure. My husbands parents, Jack and Nell Chinchen, left ENI to start African Bible College in Yekepa,a few years later and now have 4 colleges throughout Africa. The Liberian campus of ABC has been re-claimed from the jungle after the civil war, when they fled through the jungle as the rebels arrived in Yekepa. It is newly reopened (2008) & has been granted University status! Brother Del is at the helm there, a return 'home' for he and his wife, Becky. (Del has lived in Africa most of his life, Liberia then Kenya since the early 90's waiting to go back) We spent our honeymoon at ELWA in Monrovia. So many memories. Glad I found this site.

I was amazed to stumble on this site. I too have lovely memories of Liberia and am saddened by what has happened to the place. Although I only lived there 3 years, I met some long lasting friends. Gisela and Susanne Andersson of Sweden. On the 19th of December 2005 after 28 years I came to Sweden to see them for three weeks. Sweden is a beautiful country and after so long it was nice to see them again. My parents are Harry and Aaf, my sister is Patricia(1963). I remember I had a great time, when I was growing up. School from 07.00 to 13.00 and after that to the swimmingpool or the beach. My parents chose an English school, but I can't remember much. I do remember all the red colour roads and the sugarcane sticks mmmmm, that was super. The fresh coconuts and how the locals would clime up the trees. How sad I was when they would chop down trees and all the birdnests (looking like boots) with the eggs and the little birds would be distroyed. On January 2nd this year, my father, Bjørn Ekrem, at the age of 77, passed away. He died from the injuries he acquired in a car accident he was in on December 17th. His friend and companion in life, Inger, died instantly in the accident, while my father lost consciousness and later died, never having been awake. Up until the time of the accident, my father led an active and fulfilling life, and was in very good health. This fact was our consolation in the very difficult time while he lay unconscious, as it was, and still is, after his death. We miss him.

Hi all friends and former LAMCO'ers. (Reentry to update my e-mail address) I first came to LAMCO Buchanan as a consultant in 1985 to reprogram some control systems for the washing plant. At that time I only stayed for four months, but when I been back in Sweden for a couple of months I was asked If I'd like to come and work for LAMCO so I went back to Buchanan in June -86 and stayed for two years, and I loved it and got a lot of good friends. I worked for the electrical department as senior foreman, in charge of installation, repair and maintenance on the plant from car-dumper to ship loader. I worked for Raymond International on the Lamco project. I built railroad bridges at KM 212 and 213 and started one at KM 233. I then went to Monrovia and built a housing project for Mobil Oil. I opened the LOG PARK at TROPOI (accept my apology I am A NON LAMCONIAN) and became acquainted with some train drivers & supervisers. My wife and I lived in a wooden house/office (!) - atthe out-set without water or electricity - but eventually got a generator. Got to know BERTIL PERSSON and WILLIE McCULLOCH - a fellow Scot. Lamco train crews made our lives a little easier in our remote situation - and we appreciated the 'WHISTLE' as the train trundled through TROPOI in the middle of the night. This may add to the memories of some of the Lamco employees who knew of our existence in TROPOI.

I was working for the german steel errection company schauenberg, and was in charge of building up the new crusher. later i worked for Lamco JV in charge for dismentel the old workshop and the watertank and the old crusher... the last two years i was working for the developing department of the mine and in this time i was one of the founders of the lamco go kart club and i built the new clubhouse and the race track. In 1971 i married Bente Ekrem, daughter of Björn Ekrem and in 1973 our lovely daughter Bianca was born in our beloved Liberia/Yekepa ;-) In March 73` we sadly left the beautifule Liberia towards London. Now i live in Freiburg blackforest and i was very happy to find out about this site, to look at old friends and places and to remember great times like flying and golfing ... i hope to find the time soon to pick up some pictures and put them in here too ....

Just recently I came across an editorial in COAL AGE a mining publication which dealt with ongoing efforts of MITTAL MINING to restore and renovate the mine and the railraod facilities at LAMCO.I worked within the railroad dept.in a supervisory capacity, being in charge of the continous welding method of the rail road track acc.to the "THERMIT"mode.The article of course brought back fond memories, memories I wouldn't want to miss for anything.I was curiuos enough of course to surge for a web side and when I found it and saw the GUEST BOOK I immedeately looked for names from the past. I recognized the names of Ursula and Theo Baron and their children which my wife Marianne as a substitute teacher tought German at the International School, and the name of my friend Rex Priddice, who was kind enough to take in Bobby our dog when we left Liberia.In my profeesion I have seen most countries of the world, but Liberia is still dear to me. Hi, My name is Miama Hoff, and I was born at LAMCO Hospital, in Liberia. My family relocated after our estates was completed and resided in paynesville, but I missed Yekapa the most. Growing up there same more like a utter utopia for me and my friends. I attended Saint Joseph. Sister Matalina was my favorite nun. I miss her so much & the memories from home. Yesterday I saw a documentary on the Dutch television about the behaviour of apes. In that documentary were interviews with Adriaan Kortlandt. I was his assistant for about 4 years. I still am in regular contact with him (he's now 88 years old, and finishing his autobiography). The documentary made me think about the year 1986, in which Kortlandt and I visited Guinea (Bossou) and Liberia (Yekepa and surroundings) for studying the tool-use (cracking nuts with stone hammers and anvils) of wild-living chimpanzees. And then I (naively) wondered whether LAMCO Nimba would still exist. Alas no! I still remember H.N. Bas Koenen's remark about the extremely good condition of the roads in the direction of Guinea: "In case of trouble we want to get out fast enough". I do hope that many people have succeeded, I've got no idea when it all went wrong (1995?). A few things I still remember from our 3-week visit to Liberia and Guinea are the arrival at Robertsfield airport, the guest house in (I think) Buchanan (with a 100 decibel airconditioner in our bedroom :-), the train ride (I think with John Pervola) to Yekepa, and the fabulous guest house in Yekepa. One of the managers (Pervola?) kept a chimpanzee and a leopard in cages. The chimp was so jealous that we had our attention on the leopard, that he threw stones at us! Yekepa was our home base for a 2-weeks visit to Bossou, just across the border. After one week dr. Kortlandt fell ill and he went back to Yekepa. In Bossou I got regular visits from the people of Lamco-Nimba, they once even brought a barrel filled with cold fresh water and ice cubes! The last week of our expedition was in Liberia. We looked for chimpanzees in the surroundings of a hill called Gba. I indeed found tracks of them, including "workshops" for cracking nuts. On the last day we visited the mine. As a graduate in geology I was very impressed with that huge hole in the mountain. From what I swiftly read in the guest book I understand that John Pervola passed away and that Bas Koenen is still alive and doing well. I understood from Kortlandt that Yekepa also was his home-base for earlier expeditions to Bossou, from the sixties onwards. But the main thing I remember from those 3 weeks to Africa, is that I fell in love with that amazing continent and with the people who live there. So thank you for this web site! Ewald Holzhaus

Great job, Heidi. I strongly believe that this site will connect many friends as intended. I lived in Buchanan, attended the St Peter Claver School, and always visited friends in Lamco (Loops 1, 2, & 3). My father, the late Jeffrey Horace, worked with Lamco - Buchanan. I remember making last minute decisions on Friday evenings to hop on a train to Yekepa. I had relatives and friends in areas B & E. Sometimes, I would leave Yekepa on a Saturday evening to go dancing at the 'Dark Forest Spot' in Ganta, Nimba. We moved around freely without fear. I strongly believe that Liberia will one day be the 'land of opportunity' for many/all of us who fled from oppression.

Just a quick comment to say my father, William Murray Hutton (Bill) ex LAMCO electrical/mechanical engineer passed away on friday the 25th of April 2008 in his 80th year. A loving father to myself, Linda Hutton and Carolyn Hutton. Anyone who knew or remembers him is more than welcome to attend his funeral which will be held at the crematorium, Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland on 1st of May at 14:45 hours.

Per and I would like to come into contact with people who have close connections with anybody in Liberia or who have been there recently. We intend to travel to Liberia this year. Our son Reinar went to school in Yekepa and our daughter is born in Yelepa and went to school in Buchanan. I am taking at present a Master degree in "Forced Migration and Refugee Studies" at the American University in Cairo and intend to have a look how Liberia and especially Yekepa and Buchanan and try to find out what happened to the people there during and after the civil war, with the possibilities to make this my thesis. What happended to our friends from the hospital in Buchanan in Yekepa?. We learnt that Dr. Sirleaf died in may 2007 but have had not other news. Hi! Lived in Buchanan, went to school, 3rd grade in the movie room, near the old Mess hall. 4th grade in the house opposite the Mess hall beside the mini golf course. We went home in May -1963. My father John first worked in the Mess hall, later he worked at the Vianini camp were all the bachelors lived. My mother Anne-Marie, worked at the Philips camp. I have a younger brother, Hans, he went to Pre School. I have many very wonderful memories from our stay in Liberia. I had a monkey, a mangabee, called Jacko and many other animals. I learned to swim at the old lighthouse, and I almost drowned at the suicide beach. Lucky for me someone jumped in the water and saved me. I never got to thank that man properly and that has bothered me a lot. When I think back, there are some many things that I enjoyed. Going down to Waterside in the afternoon to buy roasted peanuts and look into all the shops, all those mystic scents. Going into the bush, walking with Berry Cola and his cows. Staying out all Sunday on one of the beaches on the east side. Riding in the cabin of the locomotive, going home after a visit in Nimba. Or when the rain came; I remember on afternoon, we had stopt at the airstrip, the rope was up, and we all got out of the bus because it was hot. Standing there waiting, the rain came, big wet drops. In a couple of minutes, we were all soaking wet, the drops bounced up knee-high. Most of all I miss, Ylva Jonasson, a class mate and Jan Eklund, class mate and neighbour. Of cause I miss a lot of other persons and friends. If any one has a memory of me, most people don’t, please write and say hallo. Maybe you remember my parents, they are still living in Stockholm and Bålsta. Now may I wish you a Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year. Does any one remember the White foam we sprayed on the mosquito net? My name is Miama Azelea hoff, and I am from Liberia. I was born at LAMCO Hospital, in Yekepa. I spent most of my childhood there till my parents moved to Monrovia. I now reside in the U.S. due to the civil war. I visited last year after eighteen years, and I can't tell you how ecstatic I was to be back home. I felt like I never left. Everything was still familiar to me, my people, cultures, ocean, even though some place were devastated by the war, being home really had a profound effect on me. I shot a short documentary when I visited the orphanages there and created a non profit organization called SHADES of Liberia. I hoping to travel at the end of the year to finish the documentary. I am hoping to get Oprah's support on it. This organization caters to the displace kids that endure the civil war. I am creating a school that will educate the youths and am doing other project that would reshape their lives. I want the school to be set up in Yekepa. My mother advise me to set it up in Area (A). I am currently working on the web site. I wanted to connect with you because, I remember a lot of Swedish people use to reside there, and I can't tell you how glad I am to have come across your web site. Heidi, it is good works of people like you that is responsible for making the world smaller, and closer by the day.You and others who came up with the idea for this website deserve special commendation! You're all cool, creative original thinkers. KUDOS! I worked at the LAMCO Buchanan operations in 1976 as information officer and enior information officer, respecively. Almost three years later I was transferred to Yekepa to head Radio LAMCO as controller upon the sudden death of my dear friend, Mr. Obi. I am particularly fond of my tenure in Buchanan where I had the opportunity of receiving new LAMCO employees for orientation about the company's unique culture, and its relations to the host community. I was previleged to meet some of the most wonderful people from all over the world at LAMCO. My childhood in Yekepa was by far the best part of my life!!!! It's really hard for people around me to understand what I mean when I talk about the freedom we kids had to run amuck, explore, build camps, climb trees, swim, horse ride, play Golf etc i could go on and on. My brother was born out there but we left when he was three so he doesn't remember, i've tried explaining but he does'nt understand what a great life it was. I maybe female but I was definately one of the lads... I have so many memories of my mum trying to make me wear girlie things but how can you climb a tree in a dress? She gave up in the end. I lived in Buchanan in Loop 3 with my younger(but uglier) brother Steven and my parents - Ray & Dot. We spent a lot of our time either at the golf/tennis club and the nautical club. What a fantastic web site this is. The memories just come flooding back. Just to see some of my old friends faces again on the school photos brought a huge smile to my face. The way of life, the friends we made, the whole lifestyle is something that I will always hold close to my heart. If only my own chidren could understand how it was living in Liberia and maybe have some of it for themselves. Unfortunately that wil probably never happen. My grandmother ran the Liberian Red Cross when Tolbert was overthrown. Aside from my family's close relations with a long line of Liberian founders and presidents, my father was an acting ambassador in Japan. To say the least, we had to leave before being hunted down. Politics were less than desirable while I lived in Liberia, but they only deteriorated after a few family members and I left. I still struggle with how the coup of 1980 was allowed to happened. I had a friend named Bihia. I don't remember her last name because she was like a sister to me and her last name might as well been my own. I've lost many family members since then to the chaos there; but my family remains in Liberia, fighting for a land they feel is their home and destiny.

I am recollecting memories from Liberia tonight, after a very nice phone call with a good old friend. Even though Facebook is taking over as a contact point for us "Liberians", I see that there still are a lot of nice countributions to the guest book. I get so proud when reading all your touching comments about the pages and my work with them. I must say that I don't put in that much work with them any more. Hello everyone. I would like to say thank you to Heidi and all for creating this wonderful site. This brought tears to my eyes when i read your introduction. I really miss Lamco. I lived with my grandparents, the Rancys in area F and when we left at the end of 1980 to move to Monrovia, it was like a whole new world. The experinces and culture of Lamco is one that we could never fully describe to anyone and they would gain a sense of understanding and appreciation unless they shared in those expreinces. I hope AcelarMittal can really assist in rebuilding and making it close to the Lamco that we know so that some of us may return home with our families.

Our family moved to Liberia when my father accepted a job with Lamco. He worked in the electrical department. I started of in Kindergarten and finished 4th grade when our family returned to the Netherlands. Memories include: the bush, the harbor, our homes in Loop 3, Vianini Camp and Loop 1. Hello, my old yekepa friends i'm glad to finde this homepage.. spent the best time of my life in Liberia, not a day goes by that my mind drifts away to those times. The freedom that we had as kids growing up in that enviroment. I mostly remember the bush trips we would do with our motorbikes, snakes, scorpions and other animals that we caught and play tennis , snooker at the swimming pool with Mr lee i think his name was ... This is a very good effort. It brought back tears to see how bad things had gotten. There is some hope with the coming of Mattel. I do plan to be in Liberia early 2009. Plan on visiting lamco, Yekepa. Thanks to the providers of all the pictures.
