International Intervention in Palestine

International Intervention may be the solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

25/04/2002

Every day that passes by makes it clearer. We and the Palestinians can't solve our disputes by ourselves. What good can a unilateral withdrawal bring to us? That the Palestinians will keep fighting us for the Right of Return and the destruction of Israel, this time using a real army? How can anyone guarantee our security after we have put ourselves in such a disadvantage, looking for peace and justice? Other questions touch the cease-fire demand from the Palestinians. Will it really get them freedom, or will our settlements continue to expand in full power?

We and the Palestinians lack the western world's taste of total national war. This is why we can only get peace with the aid of the western world, which suffered the world wars and understands the cost of wars. We do need this intervention, before we enter the bloodbath that parallels the world wars. Only outsider force can force the only solution: two states for two people. Israel for Israelis, Palestine for Palestinians.

But what is this force we are talking about? The UN?

The UN resolutions don't offer protection to anyone. It doesn’t matter if we or the Arabs are the ones who don't comply with them. There were UN troops in Sinai before the 6 days war and they didn't stop it. They ran away at the first sign of troubles. The UN forces also do nothing in South Lebanon nowadays.

What we need is a strong, objective, brave and deterrent enough force to implement the peaceful solution here, even if it encounters resistance. We need intervention, not observation. The force will have to start deploying in the border zones, and bomb any Israeli army target that defies the demand to returning to Israel, and it will expel the settlers back to Israel by any means necessary. They will also make sure that security exists in Israel. If suicide bombers strike, they will bomb the terrorist nests to the ground. In a case of firing over the border, no matter if the Palestinians are shooting at Israel or vice versa, the shooting area will get cleaned by bombing, even in civilian areas.

I know those mission objectives above sound harsh and horrible, but the alternative is only continuing this escalating conflict until a big war erupts, draining many thousands, maybe even millions of lives. The current little war has already 2,000 victims and no solution in sight. I do believe that the sides will keep restraint when there is a strong force is guaranteeing their national ambitions and security. If the Israeli government will send IDF to protect the settlements, this time against an international army, when it's clear that we can get peace by returning to our real border then I will finally fully support the conscientious objectors. This will be the only time when we will have a real chance for peace, on a silver plate, and not some vague promises.

An open question is what is this force? Since the UN is disqualified, and an Arab force is far from objective, the only remaining force is NATO. The US has shown in Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq and other places that they know how to force their proposals. Even the most fanatic Israeli and Palestinian will think twice before attacking posts where the American flag is waving.

I know that the American foreign policy is pro Israeli, and the Arabs don't trust them. However, trust isn't the question here, the force should act whether it is welcomed or not. The Americans are the closest to objective. They object the settlements, and support a Palestinian State. Practically, they are pro Israelis, and they don't put all their weight for forcing their ideas on Sharon, but theoretically they do have the most objective policy and view. All they need is a slight change in their practical attitude, and American bombers are on their way to end this long Israeli-Palestinian conflict!
