Don't Drain Israel

The Lebanese government should not provoke Israel by draining the Hatzbani River

9/14/2002

35 years ago the Six Days War was set to fire, changing the Middle East forever. One of the main reasons of the war in the Syrian front was the Syrian attempt to tilt the sources of the Jordan River, and drain the Sea of Galilee By that. The Sea of Galilee supplies over 30% of the Israeli water, thus making it an invaluable source of water for the country with the crumbling water reserves.

At Mars 2001 the Lebanese started to set up pumping plants in the Lebanese part of the Hatzbani. According to the CIA World Factbook, it is Israel where "limited arable land and natural fresh water resources pose serious constraints", while Lebanon has "water-surplus state in a water-deficit region".

Recently the Lebanese started pumping water from the Wazani springs, that contribute 36% of the water of the Hatzbani River. According to the Lebanese publications, they will pump 10,000 cubic meters a day (that is 3,650,000 cubic meters a year). This will not drain the Hazbani, but it may hurt the nature reserve of the river, which is located down the stream, inside Israel. All in all, the Lebanese project will reduce the amount of water coming to the Jordan River by 3.75%.

When the pumping was about small, local plants to supply villages near the river Israel protested only in words. It is after all their right to use the water reasonably. It is not their right to send the water to 60 towns and villages many kilometers away, drain the river and another country. It is no longer a humanitarian case of drinking water supply to villages by the river, but an agricultural project that consumes a large volume of water.

Although the project is not an initiative of the Hizbullah, the organization supports it proudly, and conducts frequent patrols near the pumps, believing they can open another confrontation point with Israel. It is a dangerous business, and after getting the credit for freeing South Lebanon from the Israeli occupation, the Hizbullah should not keep provoking Israel.

Wars have been fought for lesser things than water, and when the spice of life is at such scarce, war is a viable option when nothing drains through your faucet.

The Arabs should not risk in trying to drain Israel once again. Last time they did it thousands of people lost their life, the occupation started and Israel was established as a regional superpower. It is important for the fragile situation in the Middle East that Israel will not be under such a serious threat again.
