The Dangers of Humiliation

Europe should think twice before arresting Israeli security officials for war crimes.

11/2/2002

The former Israeli chief of staff, Shaul Mofaz almost got arrested in Britain after an Arab lawyer started a judicial campaign against him, claiming Mofaz is responsible for war crimes. This brings us to a dangerous point, where the courts are used for political goals.

The courts should not be used to create political pressure, and serve the interest of those who have a narrow vision on the conflict. If they want to portrait themselves as objective 3rd party, Europe should think what their acts are causing, especially to the feeling of the sides.

What should an Israeli think of Europe when in such a hard time, when terrorist claim lives almost daily they decide to prosecute our defenders? After world war one the devastating power of humiliation was demonstrated. Humiliating the German people, placing all the responsibility to the war on their side and sanctioning them by shattering their economy made them isolationists and caused them to vote for Hitler.

This would be exactly the impact of arresting Israeli officials or boycotting Israel. It will not make Israelis realize the evil we have done. It will make us whine about the evil done to us, and this time we will also be right. If they decide to take legal actions against officials, they should also crack down the fund collectors that raise funds for terrorism and any branch of anti Israeli terrorist organizations in Europe.

Making the history repeat itself will be very bad for all the involved sides. If Europe decides to make legal action and arrests, they should balance it out. Balance is the key here, and the difference between hypocrisy and terrorism support to peacemaking. Discrimination will not be tolerated by any side.

Europe should be the first to realize the complexity of the situation and the importance of avoiding reckless and one-sided actions they are going to regret. They don't want to find themselves in the credits of a future Israeli Hitler. Be balanced or don't be. Just don't be one sided and screw it all.
