Chapter 1: Behind the enemy lines

The first chapter. The astonishing victory against ARMYxIMP

12/04/2003

Worf started to walk out of the base and looked at the base once in a while, seeing how it looked smaller each time he looked. The command told him to plan his corps’ advancement path, and he believed that the general must look at the terrain before the battle. The computer generated topographic display would never reveal as many details as the general’s eye. It was afternoon, and Worf thought to go to the hill in the border and return with the first signs of twilight. There might be hostile activity in this region. He was surrounded by bushes, and suddenly he heard voices behind him. He had no idea how could an enemy get behind him. He was fully concentrated throughout all the scouting.
He hoped that he would never have to make this decision between getting captured or killed. He drew his rifle quickly and turned around.
He did not have to make this harsh decision. Bahlool's eyes were open widely, and he had a huge smile upon his face when his eyes met Worf's. "Oh my god, Bahlool!!! What are you doing here? Were you sent into this sector too?" The two men were close friends since they were at the rookie camp, and Bahlool answered the questions as they hugged. "The central command is planning a major offensive. We don't have the numbers for a slow and safe advancement, nor an effective way to govern occupied lands. We will launch a surprise attack, coordinated with our allies"
The two commanders continued their reconnaissance tour and returned to their bases. In the field headquarters, attack plans were starting to get a form. 3 days later, the mayhem began.
Worf watched the battle commence. The IMP's defenses were obviously unprepared. He grinned as the EQ armored divisions broke through the IMP's lines and advanced. He finally got a few sleeping hours in a transport plane that carried him to the new front line, deep in IMPian territory. When the plane reached the destination, Worf got out of it and headed to the command tent. Among General Spaige, who led the whole operation, Bahlool was there, with another man that Worf didn't know. He wasn't wearing the Equalizer's uniforms, but a uniform of CNA, the ally nation that aided the EQ greatly. Spaige opened the conversation. "Worf, you already know me and Bahlool. This is Godfather from CNA". Worf and Godfather shook hands.
Godfather was actually the president of CNA, but he liked the idea of returning to be a commando just for a moment, like his 20's.
"You guys are going to carry a special operation, behind the enemy lines. Try to do it with the least noise you can. You are good fighters, but you are only 3. The IMP's scientists are going to have a major breakthrough in their weapon technology. With the new weapon they are developing, a single infantryman will be able to slaughter tanks like an elite soldier can slaughter schoolchildren with a machinegun. "In 24 hours exactly, the final test will end, and a messenger will carry the data to the main factories. I want you to intercept the messenger and prevent his mission by any means necessary. That's not all. You will then go to the lab, delete every document they have on it and copy it to datadisk we will supply to you. We might find this thing useful. Now get some 8 hours sleep and then move your dirty ass-s to the Hurricane transport plane
" You will parachute close to the target zone, complete your mission and then go to the southern front. Cross it and call for assistance. Don't use your long-range radios, we have half of the IMP between us and you can bet they're listening. Good night!

The 3 soldiers looked and memorized the mission's parameters on the plane. As they finished the mission's learning, the captain's voice was heard on the speakers next to them: "10 minutes to destination. Get ready!"
The men packed and checked their equipment, and after ten minutes they were on the air. It was a dark, cold and starless night. Worf, Bahlool and Godfather happily hid their parachutes once they reached the ground. Bahlool started leading the team toward the dangerous laboratory that hosted the research.
Godfather was the first to hear the closing danger. He marked the others to stop. The troops quickly lay on the ground, focusing their senses. After a few seconds it came. A patrol of 3 guards was in front of them. Fortunately, the team already had their weapons drawn and silencers loaded. The patrolmen fell on the ground right after the sound of 3 clicks was heard. Godfather said that they better hide the bodies. The other team members agreed and hid them behind the trees. They had no time for digging.
The team has reached a few tens of yards from the lab. Only the barbed wire, equipped with advanced electronic system to notice touches. Worf and Bahlool started to put distracting devices on the fence in order to neutralize it. "There we go" said Worf. The troops crossed the fence and jumped into the base. They had to move to the laboratory in haste before a patrol gets into them. The plan was to go to the backdoor of the lab, attach a little bomb into it and get in. Their timing was perfect.
"In two minutes, the messenger will be meeting with the head scientist. Let's blow the hell out of this door, and their meeting" said Worf. Bahlool attached the bomb to the door, set the timer and the 3 of them kept clear of the area. The explosion destroyed the door. Before they could feel happy, another explosion was heard. Worf could see nothing but smoke. He had no idea what happened, but it looked like they were ambushed, and grenades hit them. Worf started to run in order to avoid being a static target. He couldn't see anything, including the other team members. He entered the building and found himself alone. He had no idea where are the team members. He also had no idea what can he do for them. But the mission is not yet over. He started to walk to the meeting room, while looking for his communication device. When he found it, he discovered it was destroyed in the blasts. Worf cursed and kept on going. He had finally got to the door, which beyond it was his objective. He listened to the conversation inside. Two men were talking about weapons, a delivery, and an attack of the base. When Worf was completely sure that it's the right place and the right time, he shot the door lock. Then he opened the door in a kick. He looked on the surprised facial expressions of the two men in the room and decided he should spare them from the great fear of the gun aimed toward them for so much time. Two short bursts were more than enough to end it. Worf started to gather datadisks on the bodies and the table, and scanned them with the terminal that was in the room. He knew that he is counting the seconds, and can't waste too much time there. However, if the right datadisk isn't recovered, this mission will be the greatest disaster happened to the EQ ever. He finally found the right datadisk. Quickly he pushed the disk into his pocket and walked to the door to get out of there, maybe find his teammates. But instead, he found a large IMP soldiers squad in the corridor. "That's enough, dirty Equalizer" yelled the squad leader, and Worf realized he will be caught. Running away is suicide thought Worf, while surrendering will ruin the mission. Worf dropped his weapon. The squad leader asked him to throw the additional ones too. Worf dropped all the grenades in his belt, the pistol and the knife in his pocket. His plan worked well. After that, he put his hand in the pocket of the datadisk, pretending he is getting another weapon. But instead of weapon, he took the datadisk and trashed it to the floor with as much power as he could. The datadisk loudly broke into thousands pieces. It would never be recovered. Worf then started behaving submissively and didn't resist the strong tying by the IMP soldiers. Only a miracle would save him.
He was then transferred to a small prison cell at this base. He believed he waited there about two hours. He got no food, but he couldn't complain. His thoughts were moving again to his teammates. Where are they? Did they survive the ambush? Will they rescue him, after he didn't rescue them?
The absolute answer to these questions had arrived.
Worf heard some shots and shouts. Few seconds later, he heard heavy footsteps closing the door and then it was opened. Two men stood there, and they were no jailers. Bahlool handed Worf a rifle and said it's time to go out of the place. "Reinforcements are arriving any minute".
The small team started to walk and got out of the building. The first lights of dawn were shining, and it only added to their worries. They passed the electric fence, this time not delaying for neutralizing it, anyway the highest alarm is on. Few meters after the fence, a few IMPs found them. They won the initiative and sprayed the surprised commando team. The team lay on the ground but Godfather was hit in his leg before. With the distraction of a high explosive grenade on the IMP unit, and the cover smoke grenade, the team began to run. Godfather was limping, and supported by his friends.
The team has quietly consulted and decided to go to the nearby town, an hour of walking and steal a car to get them to the front line.
The quiet and the careful walking of the team prevented them from being discovered again before the town.
When they finally reached the town, Worf was amazed to see how similar it is to a typical town in the EQ. But there was no time for thoughts about brotherhood and unity.
"Our best chance to survive is to wait till everybody goes to work, then find a calm suburb and steal the cars of those who were fool enough to go to work with the bus today" uttered Bahlool. The others agreed. This time the luck was bad to them. They had to stay undercover in this hostile town until everyone went to work. Slowly counting the seconds, Worf had a shiver every time a police car or an army truck passed near. Military helicopter was patrolling in the sky, but with their firearms hidden in the backpacks, and their dirty commando uniforms replaced by civilian clothes that are available in the local stores, the IMPs didn't find them. But they can, thought Worf.
"The time has come" said Godfather, and the team started to walk toward the outskirts of the town. When they found a nice car, Worf shot the lock. Godfather entered and lay in the backseat, while Worf hopped into the passenger seat and Bahlool took the driver seat and starting the switch. After some messing with the wires, the car's engine was set to life.
Worf and Bahlool couldn't avoid getting worried from the military presence on the road. But they just had to stay in their seat and look pretty. They can do it. They hoped that the front had advanced a lot while they were away.
After driving for 4 hours, one challenge was left to them. Bahlool could surely pass this huge line of cars that were evacuating the people from their homes. But how will they cross the front? And with all their radios broken, how will the EQ soldiers know not shoot their car?
"It will be ok" said Worf, while getting a rifle and a white undershirt from his backpack. The explosions from the front lines were clearly heard here. Field hospitals were on every inch, filled with IMP wounded and dead. It was clear that this army is retreating. The soldiers were so panicked that they didn't even try hail a civilian car moving in the opposite direction.
Oh no, here it comes, Worf thought sadly. A tank had started to chase them. Bahlool started to drive in zigzag, but it was hard to evade the machinegun and the cannon fire. The last thing Worf remembered was the car window shattered by dozens of bullets, a great pain in the chest and fainting. Bahlool could hardly drive with one hand bleeding like crazy and it took every single force he had to keep stably holding the steering wheel. "I'm very sorry guys", he muttered when he saw the last line of surprised IMP troops standing between the car and the rest of EQ forces, "but I have to do it. If you don't move, don't blame me in the next world". He didn't count how many people he hit, but he knew the answer was enough.
The EQ soldiers in the front line did not believe their eyes. Between the IMP artillery, rushing at 200 kilometers per hour, a civilian car with a white flag attached to it was getting closer and closer to them.
In the parliament of the EQ, president Mandrake received the news happily. "It must be that team" he muttered, "tell the troops to let them pass through".
The army command was cheerful. "They've made it!" shouted General Spaige. The report was that 3 soldiers were found unconscious in the strange car. The pictures from the car confirmed the success of the mission.
