The people of Aurora, a planet devoted to aesthetics and art as life, have grown concerned over the increasing of a dark force coming from the planet Summa Nulla. They have traced it to Magnifico, a city made entirely of malls that flourishes on greed and consumption. It is here that our story begins. Ruby is hired by an Aurorian named Man Ray to find the source of the dark force, codenamed "Zumzamin."
In the first few minutes of the story, Ruby also meets a beautiful young girl called Inanna, who is curious about the origin of an amulet given to her by her father before his death seven years before. Ruby finds Teru and he tells Inanna that the origin of the amulet is the underside of the planet, the land of Erishkigal. As Ruby searches for the source of Zumzamin, Inanna searches for the meaning behind the seven gates inscribed on her amulet. Their quest continues beyond the physical realm, into the Invisible World, which is a different experience for every person that steps into it. It seems fairly straightforward a mission, but how does one confront a force that can’t exist in too large a form, but without which, chaos would rule?
It gets pretty deep in Ruby 3. The quick, snappy, three-minute episodes of Ruby 1 and 2 have been replaced by longer, up to half-hour stories. The Android Sisters return (although not until part 2), and a mysterious flame from Ruby’s past returns. The multiple quests of Ruby, Inanna, Kapoor and Teru add to the depth of the plot, and similar quests take place in Ruby 4. Just as humorous and spellbinding as its predecessors, Ruby 3 is a definite essential to the series.
(note: the actors who played Inanna’s father, Frog-Mouth, the And/Or Sisters and the miscellaneous people on the train and in the bar are not recorded in Ruby 3 or in the cassette/CD cases. Another unsolved mystery.)
